SERVICE AS ACTION MYP

Action (learning by doing and experiencing) is a key component in IB programme. Service, as a subset of action, has always been a shared value of the IB community. In Grades 6-10, students are encouraged to participate in service-based activities where the students have to take action. They strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. MYP students should, through their engagement with service as action:

  • become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth
  • undertake challenges that develop new skills
  • discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities
  • persevere in action
  • work collaboratively with others
  • develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding
  • consider the ethical implications of their actions.

Service as Action is a requirement for IB MYP graduation and is continued to further education at     Al Jabr Islamic School. Although students may complete their reflections at any time it is recommended that they are done as they take part in the different activities.

 

The COMMUNITY PROJECT

Grade 8

The community project focuses on community and service, encouraging students to explore their right and responsibility to implement service as action in the community. It gives students an opportunity to develop awareness of needs in various communities and address those needs through service learning. As a consolidation of learning, the community project engages in a sustained, in-depth inquiry leading to service as action in the community. The community project may be completed individually or by groups of a maximum of three students.

Interview will be held in mid-August to prepare their interest. Progress checking and verifying their commitment to the program will be accomplished on April so that the portfolios are complete for the interviews.

These are advertised in student assemblies and within the wider community. Students must keep a process journal of their Service as Action activities and write reflections. Please refer to Process Journal of Community Project for detailed guidance.

 

The PERSONAL PROJECT

Grade 10

The Personal Project encourages students to practice and strengthen their approaches to learning (ATL) skills, to consolidate prior and subject-specific learning, and to develop an area of personal interest.

The Personal Project provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and often creative product/outcome and to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning in the MYP. It is a student driven, extended, independent piece of work completed by every student in the last year of the program independently according to students’ individual needs.

Assessment of the PP is through the PP report. In this piece of work, students detail how they engaged with the process of completing the project and reflect on the process, the outcome, and themselves as learners. All stages of the PP are documented by students in a process journal. Please refer to Personal Project process journal for detailed information.

Each student receives the journal in mid-August and is expected to bring it to meetings with their supervisor until the PP finish. To celebrate the end of the PP process the school hosts a Personal Project Exhibition with presentations and performances which is held in March.

Information and initial instructions about the Personal Project will be given to students and parents at the end of Grade 9. Students will be expected to formulate their ideas and begin research in preparation for the start of the Personal Project in Grade 10.
